Mama’s unless you’ve been living in a cave or under a rock you’ve heard about the Trayvon Martin & George Zimmerman case. You know that the case was tried in Florida and that a jury found George Zimmerman not guilty. As a Mama of 4 beautiful kids (8, 6, 2 and 11 mo.) I cannot imagine losing a child, especially in a senseless act of violence. I feel that no Mama should have to bury their child, but I have no control over issues such as these. If it were up to me no one would have a single ounce of bad in them (I know I’m part of the unicorn & Care Bear club), but unfortunately that is not the world we live in. I’ve watched the news, read social media, online articles and opinions. One thing remains certain, we are divided as a country and we always have been.
I have seen how a man that killed an unarmed teen who had skittles and iced tea walk free. This saddens me to no end. I’m not sad because a white Hispanic man killed a black teen, I’m sad because a mother had to bury her son because of one person’s refusal to follow directions. I’m not the judge nor am I the jury but something is wrong with this picture. So I often wonder what’s left to do. How can I take a stand against violence and things or people that help perpetuate it? Well we all know that in our country money talks and everything else walks. So I will let my money do the talking. How you say? Well in the voice of Kevin Hart, Let me explain.
Gone are the days of being just a consumer of goods. Hello to the days of supporting positivity and people who strive to be positive. I will make sure I support those things and people that are trying to do something to help the cause of my community and society in general. I know that right now I may not reach a lot of people or have a big platform, but I still have a voice. I expected some people in high places to be pissed off because of the killings of our youth. I expected some of our actors, actresses, rappers, singers, professional sports figures to step up to the plate and use their voice. Heck when they ask us to support their movies, albums, projects, and causes we go to the box office, iTunes, arenas or concert halls in droves to help them reach record sales. Why can we run and show support to help them achieve their goals (Grammy, Espy, Billboard hits, Oscars, MVP, Championships, etc.) but when our communities need help and a voice we look lost and confused.
I can’t tell you what should be important to you and your family, but I know that peace and equality is important for me and my family. I want my kids to have a fair chance and not be gunned down because they look suspicious. I want my husband to be able to drive a nice car and not have to worry about being pulled over because of his skin color. I want my kids to be viewed as the assets to society that they are not delinquents because of someone else’s fears. It’s high time that all people are treated equal and with the same respect. My voice may be small but I still have one and I will continue to teach my kids their history and why it is important to be smart, get good grades, stay out of trouble and to always be aware of their surroundings. They will know the importance of giving back to their community, using their voice and supporting those things and people who will lift them up.
Mama’s what do you support intentionally or unintentionally? Do you buy rap music that is degrading to women that glorifies shooting, killing, robbing, etc.? Do you purchase goods from persons or entities that support voter suppression? Do you have any idea at all what and who you support when you make a purchase? When was the last time you supported a local small business in your neighborhood that gives back to your community? If you want to see change you have to start with what you control and we all control where our dollars go. Don’t be a blind consumer with no voice! Spend your hard earned money wisely and make it work for you in more ways than one. I hope that I have inspired someone to take a look at where there money is going so they can make better choices and decisions. Happy Hump Day Mama!
Don’t just live your life, Enjoy it!
